How to Choose the Right Diameter for Your Rig?

  • Choose 76mm (3”) if: You are using a small rig with limited air compressor capacity (CFM < 350)。 Ideal for fast drilling in soft to medium formations.

  • Choose 89mm (3.5“) if: This remains our golden ratio. It offers the best balance between hole cleaning capability and penetration speed for standard 6-inch water wells.

  • Choose 102mm – 114mm (4” – 4.5“) if: You need to case a larger borehole or encounter fractured formations. The thicker wall (up to 10mm) provides extra rigidity to prevent rod bending.

  • Choose 127mm (5”) if: You are stepping up to large-diameter hammers. Note the thread changes to 4-1/2“ API REG specifically to handle higher torque and impact energy.

Advantages

  1. Unified Thread Interchangeability (Except 127mm): Save inventory costs. 76-114mm rods share the same thread, allowing you to change rod sizes without changing your top drive/sub adapter.

  2. Precision Heat Treatment: Using whole-length quenching and tempering to ensure uniform hardness (HRC 28-32) across the rod body, with reinforced ends to prevent thread galling.

  3. Custom Length Flexibility: Need a specific 3.5m rod to match your carousel magazine? We offer lengths from 1000mm to 6000mm with strict straightness tolerance (≤1.5mm/m)。

  4. Wall Thickness Optimization: We offer standard (8mm) and heavy-duty (9.19mm/10mm) options. For 102mm and 114mm, the thicker wall significantly extends fatigue life in highly abrasive formations.

FAQ

Q1:Not Sure Which Spec Fits Your Hammer?

Send us your compressor pressure, hammer model, and target depth. Our engineers will calculate the optimal rod diameter and wall thickness for your specific DTH drilling rig to maximize your ROI.

Q2:What drill bit sizes are recommended?

The recommended DTH bit sizes range from 115mm to 165mm, with 138mm, 146mm, and 152mm being the most common configurations.

Q3:Can this drill rod be used for water well drilling?

Yes. The ZD-89 drill rod is widely used in water well drilling applications and is commonly matched with FY180, FY200, and FY260 water well drilling rigs.

Q4:What drilling depth can this rod support?

Under normal drilling conditions, the ZD-89 drill rod is suitable for boreholes ranging from 100m to over 300m, depending on air compressor capacity, geological conditions, and drilling system configuration.

Q5:Which air compressor should be used?

For optimal performance, we recommend high-pressure screw air compressors with working pressures between 18 and 25 bar and air delivery capacities ranging from 20 to 28 m³/min, depending on the hammer and bit size.

Q6:Can the rod be customized?

Yes. We provide OEM and ODM services including custom lengths, thread connections, logos, packaging, surface treatment, and material upgrades according to customer requirements.
